Introduction to lorry and bus driving
As the driver of a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) or Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) you have a special responsibility - not just to yourself, but to all other road users. A professional driver should set an example to other drivers by ensuring that the vehicle is driven, at all times, with the utmost safety and with courtesy and consideration for everyone else on today's busy roads.
You will need a different licence entitlement to drive different types of buses, coaches and lorries. You must hold full (not provisional) category B entitlement (car) before you can take an LGV or PCV test. You must also gain a full category entitlement for a vehicle before taking a second test to add the trailer entitlement (+E). No additional entitlement is required to tow trailers that weigh less than 750 kg. If at any stage you lose your car licence entitlement you will also automatically lose your LGV or PCV licence.
To become an LGV or PCV driver you must possess a high degree of skill in the handling of your vehicle and also be prepared to make allowances for the behaviour of others. The right attitude and approach to your driving, together with a sound knowledge of professional driving techniques and the ability to apply those techniques, are essential.
How to choose a large goods vehicles (LGV) instructor
Driving a large goods vehicle requires skill combined with knowledge and the right attitude and driving techniques.
To become a professional driver you'll need:
- the demanding driving skills required
- the knowledge to deal with all the regulations that apply to your work
- a comprehensive knowledge of The Highway Code including the meaning of traffic signs and road markings, especially those which indicate a restriction for LGVs
It is important that you have the correct training and instruction before taking your LGV practical test.
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has developed a voluntary LGV Instructor Accreditation Scheme
to ensure that training offered to prepare new LGV drivers to take the current DSA LGV theory test and practical driving test is of a high standard. For more information please contact the LGV Register section.
