CPC periodic training
Driver CPC Periodic Training
All professional / vocational bus, coach and lorry drivers must undertake periodic training in order to maintain their Driver CPC. This applies to new drivers completing the initial qualification and entering the profession after September 2008 / 09. They must complete their first cycle of periodic training within 5 years of the date they acquired their Driver CPC.
Periodic training also applies to current drivers deemed to hold Driver CPC by acquired rights. They must complete their periodic training within 5 years of the introduction of Driver CPC as follows:
i. for PCV licence holders, by 9th Sept 2013;
ii. for LGV licence holders, by 9th Sept 2014.
Periodic training is continuing professional development which carries on throughout the driver’s career - no matter how infrequently they drive professionally. Drivers will have to complete a minimum of 35 hours of approved training every 5 years.
If a driver holds both PCV & LGV licences; they will only be required to complete one set of periodic training.
Drivers who do not maintain their Driver CPC, i.e. because they leave the industries, but who want to start working as a professional driver again, must complete 35 hours of periodic training in order to regain their Driver CPC. They must complete the training before they can resume working professionally.
Only approved courses taken with approved training centres will count towards periodic training. See below.
Subjects
Periodic training is designed to complement the individual drivers work and be relevant to their everyday job. Courses may include SAFED (safe and fuel efficient driving) style training, defensive driving techniques, first aid, health & safety, driver’s hour’s regulations and tachographs. Courses will also enable drivers to keep up to date with changing regulations. The syllabus broadly covers:
• Safe & fuel efficient driving]
• Legal Requirements
• Health and Safety, service and logistics.
There is no requirement for a course to include a test or pass/fail element.
For further information on the syllabus for Periodic Training see the ‘Driver CPC training scope and syllabus’ section.
The minimum length of a training course is 7 hours (although they may be longer); with the 7 hours being defined as contact time with the trainer.
Where a course of 7 hours is split into two parts the second must start within 24 hours of completion of the first part.
Approval process for delivering Periodic Training
The approval process for courses is managed on behalf of The Driving Standards Agency by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).
All training centres and courses will be subject to audit and approval, may be withdrawn if either are found to be non-compliant with the approval criteria or if trainers used to deliver the training are not suitably experienced.
Trainers are not required to be formally approved, but training centres will have to certify that anyone used to deliver periodic training is suitably experienced, both in the subject matter and in teaching methods.

Training records
DSA will provide a central database to keep records of the training hours completed by each driver. It will be the responsibility of the training providers to enter records onto the database. Online access will be provided to drivers to enquire on their own training records.
