Register of post-test motorcycle trainers

As part of the Government’s Motorcycling StrategyLinks to another website., the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has developed a voluntary scheme whereby motorcycle instructors who deliver post-test training can apply for DSA accreditation. Since February 2007 motorcyclists seeking post test training can access a register of accredited post-test trainers in their local area. This is called the Register of Post-test Motorcycle Trainers (RPMT).

The scheme is designed to ensure that the training delivered is of an agreed national standard. In order to qualify to be on the register, instructors will have demonstrated a high level of skill and competence in riding and instructional ability. To remain on the register, trainers will be subject to ongoing quality assurance.

Benefits to motorcycle instructors:

  • The scheme contributes to the continuing professional development of motorcycle instructors.
  • Accredited instructors should benefit from the potential business opportunities in the area of instructor training.
  • Instructors are able to receive insurance incentives.

Benefits to motorcycle riders:

  • Accredited post-test training offers consumer protection by allowing riders to make informed choices about appropriate training.
  • Rider development training is designed to raise awareness of risk and improve riding skill thereby contributing to a reduction in the number of crash related incidents.
  • Raises awareness of environmental issues (reductions in emissions and noise pollution) through DSA accredited instructor training courses.
  • Insurance incentives are available for customers receiving accredited training through the Enhanced Rider Scheme(ERS).

How can I become an approved post-test trainer?

There are three different ways to gain entry onto the register:

• Pass a DSA theory test, riding ability test, and instructional ability test.

• Successfully pass a DSA accredited training course and a DSA theory test.

• Deferred qualification route; commonly referred to as ‘grandfather rights’, providing applications are made within the first 12 months from the launch of the register and by passing the DSA theory test. The closing date for this route is 29 February 2008.

The scheme will initially be voluntary and instructors can re-register every four years. However, there will be provision for instructors to initially register for one year and then opt out if they wish. The closing date for this is also 29 February 2008. It is expected that the scheme will lead to the introduction of a mandatory register in the future.
