Large goods vehicle instructor part three
- Taking the test
- Assessment criteria
- Vehicle requirements
- Booking a part three test of instructional ability
The object of this test is to assess the adequacy of the instruction you give and your ability to pass this knowledge on to pupils. The test will last for approximately one hour.
To do this the examiner will adopt the role of a pupil who is:
- learning to drive a category C1 or C
- learning to drive a category C1+E, C+E
- wanting remedial tuition, having failed an LGV test
Taking the test
At the start of the test the examiner will explain the role adopted. You are advised to listen carefully at this point. You will be allowed a few minutes to prepare for the lesson at this stage.
The examiner will drive the vehicle and simulate faults, which are appropriate to the role the examiner has adopted.
The examiner will explain the exercise to be used as the basis of the lesson, choosing one of a possible nine pre-set test exercises. These are available from the Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) instructor section.
The candidate should accept that once the exercise gets underway, the examiner is portraying the role of a pupil. The candidate should deal with the examiner accordingly, forgetting that the examiner is really an experienced driver.
The instructions given by the candidate should be tailored to the time available, and to the standard of the pupil role-played by the examiner.
Candidates will be allowed to use lesson plans and training aids, and may refer to brief notes or subject headings. The pupil must be given a chance to demonstrate what has been taught, and any faults must be corrected.
Assessment criteria
The candidate’s knowledge and ability will be assessed on:
• the method, clarity, adequacy and correctness of instruction
• the observation and correction of the pupil’s driving errors
• general manner and attitude when dealing with the pupil
The candidate will be expected to maintain control of the lesson, be patient and tactful and give encouragement to the pupil, where appropriate.
Vehicle requirements
The candidate must provide an LGV which is properly taxed and insured, including any liability of the examiner as a driver or person in charge of the vehicle.
It must be a category C1, C1+E, C or C+E vehicle suitable for the test, meeting the minimum test vehicle requirement for the statutory driving test (depending on the category required) and be unladen.
It must be capable of the normal performance of vehicles for its type. It should have right-hand steering, readily adjustable driver’s seat and a seat for a forward-facing passenger. The candidate must also provide and display ‘L plates’ on the front and rear of test vehicle.
Booking a part three test of instructional ability
Once you have passed your part two test of driving ability you should receive a part three application form from the LGV instructor section. To book a test you need to complete the form and send it back to:
