Introduction to the large goods vehicle instructor register

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) voluntary register of Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Instructors was launched on 1 April 1997. The Register has been developed by DSA in close conjunction with the Freight Transport Association, the Road Haulage Association, the Road Haulage & Distribution Training Council - now known as Skills for Logistics, the National Training Federation, the Institute of Large Goods Vehicle Instructors, the Association of Vocational Driver Training Providers and RTITB Services Ltd.

The aim of the scheme is to reduce accidents involving large goods vehicles by raising the standard of training for lorry drivers. Testing and monitoring is carried out by DSA examiners, who have LGV experience and who are already responsible for monitoring the standards of instruction provided by car driving instructors.

Who can apply?

You can apply to be on the register if you hold a full category C1 (medium sized goods vehicles), C1+E (medium sized goods vehicle with trailer), C (rigid large goods vehicles) or full category C+E (articulated large goods vehicles or large goods vehicle/trailer combination).

You must have held a full, unrestricted driving licence for three years in the category in which you wish to instruct or accompany a trainee, and be aged over 21. You must not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to entering the register.

You must be a fit and proper person to have your name entered in the register. All convictions, including motoring offences, still in force (ie not ‘spent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) will be taken into account when your initial application is considered.

The qualifying process

Qualification will depend on passing a three part entrance examination:

  • a theory test
  • a practical test of driving ability
  • a practical test of instructional ability

You must take and pass all three parts of the exam in this order and must complete the whole qualifying process within one year. The one year period starts from the date of your first attempt at the theory test.

If you are unable to complete the process within this time, you must start again from the beginning and pass each part again if you wish to join the Register.

You may only have a maximum of three attempts at each of the entrance tests. If you do not pass in the three attempts you must wait until the end of your one-year period before you can re-start the qualifying process, starting with the theory test.

LGV Instructor Accreditation Scheme

The LGV instructor accreditation scheme was set up by DSA in conjunction with the Register Management and Development Committee (RMDC) to ensure that training offered to prepare new LGV drivers to take the current DSA LGV theory test and practical driving test is of a high standard.

Since the trial, DSA have reviewed the procedures required for the scheme to become operational, and are now in a position to accept applications from those training centres meeting the criteria.

Any organisation who would like to participate in the above scheme should be aware that in order to satisfy the approval criteria, all instructors employed by the organisation seeking accreditation must be fully qualified onto the Register of LGV Instructors and have had a certificate issued to them. Additionally they must also be registered to that company's address.

After qualification

Once you have qualified and paid the registration fee your name will be added to the register. You will receive a “Certificate of Registration” which is valid for four years.

When you are giving instruction to a candidate you should display the certificate in the bottom left-hand corner of the front windscreen of the vehicle.

If you want to remain on the register at the end of the four-year period, you will have to retake the practical examinations but not the theory test.

A reminder will be sent to your last known correspondence address about one year before your registration expires. However, it is your responsibility to ensure you start the re-qualifying process in enough time to have continued registration.
