Fixed Route Bus Services
Anyone who wishes to run a local bus service outside London needs to apply to the relevant traffic area in which the service runs. To register a service you must have a valid Bus operator’s licence (or a community bus permit or in certain cases a section 19 permit).
If you do not hold any of these you should refer to Applying for a bus or coach operating licence for information. Operators can also claim a Bus Service Operators Grant, offered by the Department for Transport.
What is a Local Bus Route? provides details describing a local bus route and what needs to be done before you can start your own.
Registration Details gives advice and guidance on how to register, and the registration process.
Further Information has advice on the legislation surrounding this scheme, as well as answering some common questions.
